FOR SALE ON ETSY: Future Past
This work was sculpted in clay. After a mold taken in plaster, two layers of 100% cotton linters were laid and pressed into the mold. After ten days of drying, the paper was pulled from the mold and let dry for another 3 days. A wood frame was constructed and sealed. Heavy duck cotton was stretched over the wooden frame, then the paper sculpture was attached to the canvas with acrylic gel. Two layers of thinned gesso were applied to the paper and after several days of drying, painted in oils. (I prefer walnut oil as it is one of the least yellowing of all artists' oils and for its durable semi-gloss, enamel-like surface qualities).

My Thoughts
Who are we? Are we made by the past or the future, that is, what we have done or what we plan on becoming? Maybe we are made from both. If so, then the 'real' self remains obscure.
In the mirror we see what we want, painting ourself with large brushes from the past with Jackson Pollack like additions of future wishes and dreads, a self unknown but deeply felt, unable to define clearly who we are.
It could be said we are known only by the way we hold ourselves seen from the back and our faces reflected in the shadows of the past of what we may become.
